Fitness Tips for Extreme Heat
I know I go over this every year but warm weather is officially here so we need to go over some safety tips.
Exercising in the heat isn’t more effective - I know it sure seems like you’re working harder when you go run at noon on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, studies show that all heat does is really slow you down and stress your body so much that you just physiologically can’t help but lower your intensity. Your body involuntarily makes every movement harder to keep you from getting heat stroke. And by the way, running at noon, getting light headed and dizzy and being close to on coming traffic is a recipe for a disaster. Hit it early in the morning or at night and know you’re not a wimp if you want to workout in the air condition. In fact, most experts believe you should workout in 75 degree temperatures tops.
Hydrate – We’ve talked about how it’s been documented that people can live without food for sometimes months. Not so with water. You need to stay hydrated. Forget the six to eight glasses of water a day tip. There’s never been any research proving the perfect amount of water intake because there are so many variables. Here’s a tip though. If you’re thirsty, you’re probably already a little dehydrated. So sipping on water habitually is a good habit, especially in the summer. If you’re like me and don’t love the taste of water, try watered down Gatorade, crystal light or another calorie free alternative.
Heat can be deadly - There’s this rumor that the only ones who suffer from heat stroke are children and the elderly. She’s assured me this is not the case. There have been many fit, healthy athletes who have died because they or their coaches didn’t understand the physiology of heat stroke. I don’t care if you’re an NFL running back or Lance Armstrong’s training partner. If you get light headed or worse, if you stop sweating, stop immediately and get inside and hydrate. If you’re still hot and lightheaded after a few minutes, call 911, you could be dying.
