Detecting a Fitness Scam

Today, we’re going to go over several common sales pitches that some in the fitness industry often use that should give you a red flag to protect your wallet.

1. Lose weight without dieting - A very old, common pitch that still seems to hook people. Remember, too lose weight you must, absolutely must put your body in a hypo caloric state. You must be burning more calories than you’re taking in. Whether your useing weight watchers, Atkins, the zone diet or whatever, this simple rule applies. This is the law of thermodynamics. If you want to lose weight you will either have to burn more, eat less or do both.

2. You must drink protein shakes – Many supplement companies, especially the ones that make protein shakes, want you to believe that if you go more than a couple of hours without food or more specifically their brand of shake, your metabolism will slow to a crawl, you’ll hit starvation mode and hold onto fat.. The term starvation has been thrown around so much many people honestly believe skipping a meal or eating a very low calorie diet will signal starvation mode and make you store fat. Your body does have a starvation mode but most experts believe you have to go weeks with very, very little food before changes in metabolism occur. It has been well documented that healthy people can live for up to 2 months without food.

3. Just 15 minutes three times a week - My job as a trainer is to give people results as quickly as possible. If there was a quicker way I would know it. There’s not. If you want to get in great shape and lose weight, you must be prepared to dedicate 5-6 days a week minimum to exercise. Intensity and style of activity varies but make no mistake about it. Your body was designed to move and be active everyday.
